In high school, I had every single line of “Pretty Woman” memorized. There are so many great ones; however, the one that runs through my head still to this day is:

Welcome to Hollywood. What’s your dream?

For me, as a coach and as a woman, it is my rallying cry.

Welcome to this magnificent life! What’s your dream?

I often come back to the wisdom of the poem below. It is the cornerstone of my work with my clients: a shift from a conditioned way of viewing ourselves and our lives to one of ownership and purpose, guided by our own choices.

Autobiography In Five Short Chapters

Chapter 1
I walk down the street.
There is a deep hole in the sidewalk.
I fall in.
I am lost... I am helpless.
It isn't my fault.
It takes forever to find a way out.

Chapter 2
I walk down the same street.
There is a deep hole in the sidewalk.
I pretend I don't see it.
I fall in again.
I can't believe I am in the same place.
But, it isn't my fault.
It still takes me a long time to get out.

Chapter 3
I walk down the same street.
There is a deep hole in the sidewalk.
I see it is there.
I still fall in. It's a habit.
My eyes are open.
I know where I am.
It is my fault. I get out immediately.

Chapter 4
I walk down the same street.
There is a deep hole in the sidewalk.
I walk around it.

Chapter 5
I walk down another street.

This poem beautifully illustrates the journey of self-awareness and growth. Each chapter represents a stage in our lives where we recognize our patterns and take responsibility for our choices.

In my coaching practice, I help women navigate their own "streets," avoid the "holes" they encounter, and chart new "streets" or paths for themselves. It's about shifting from a place of helplessness and blame to one of empowerment and intentionality.
