We Don't Say "Butt"

I remember when my kids were little and I would correct them on little infractions like saying “butt,” redirecting them to say something a little less egregious like “bottom.” Seems so hilarious looking back because I lost that battle many years ago. And in the grand scheme, that one is really not a big deal.

What I’m more concerned with is their use of “but.” That’s right: B - U - T.

The use of this word can be a road straight downhill.

It zaps any ounce of positivity, immediately turning it negative.

I made a commitment to myself a long time ago to take the word BUT out of my vernacular and replace it with AND.

It is a tiny yet monumental shift.

Try it out and see for yourself.

Begin to notice when you are using BUT in a sentence. Notice what happens on the front end and the back end (pun totally intended). For example:

The sun is shining today BUT I’m too busy to enjoy it.

Now replace it with AND:

The sun is shining today AND I’m enjoying it shining through my office window.

By nature of using the word AND, you will have to shift your perspective, and more often than not, you will move yourself into a more positive place.

When I hear one of my kids say something like, “I played well in the game, BUT I threw the ball away on that one play at half court.” The re-frame might sound like, “I played well in the game AND I will remember to use my bounce pass.”

Empower yourself and drop the “but,” my friend! Create a tiny AND mighty positive shift for yourself!

I’d love to hear from you! Try this out, and let me know how it goes! It’s a practice, AND it’s totally possible for you to get this down!
